State Champion Teams

We have documentation of 86 different Sport teams that have achieved the ultimate success, winning a State Championship.

Our teams have reached this pinnacle in 15 different Sports, with the earliest on record being 1980, and the most recent 2015.

Scroll down to see a Gallery of the Team Photos complete with team member names.

In terms of Sports with the most State Championships:

1. Skiing – 27

2. Squash -20

3. Australian Rules Football – 9

4. Netball – 6

5. Volleyball – 5

6. Track & Field – 4

7. Swimming – 3

8. Golf,  Lawn Bowls, Touch Rugby,- 2

9. Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cross Country, Table Tennis and Tennis- 1

Skiing leads the table with 27 titles (there are also 31 Australian Titles), driven by at least 7 students who were individual Australian Champions. Coach Rob Findlay was Head Coach for much of that time.

Of note are various Golden Eras. The greatest is that of Squash, where we had 15 State Champion teams between 2001 and 2005.

The best Volleyball era was between 1995 and 2001, which produced 6 State Champion teams (and an Australian Champion team – the 1998 Under 17 Girls team). Ric and Jenny Chivers were the catalyst for this era, with regular training.

Our Golden Age of Netball. was the 1980s We won 6 State Championships in 9 years – Junior (1980), Intermediate (1984, 1986) and Senior (1982, 1983, 1988). For good measure, we were also State Runner-Up 4 times in that same 9 year period – Junior (1982, 1984, 1985), Intermediate (1980), and Senior (1986), as well as twice later (Junior in 1993 and Senior in 2014). Coach Kaye Beer was the chief architect, along with at least 12 girls who made State Teams, and the fact the school fielded multiple teams on a Saturday morning (12 in 1985, 15 in 1986 – all coached by students).

In Football, there were 9 State Champion teams in the 11 years between 1994 and 2005, as well as 2 Herald Shield Premiers. Coaches John Evans and Gary Michael were the key coaches of those teams. Most of these teams were led by the 6 future AFL players (including Steve Johnson of course) who all debuted in the AFL between 2001 – 2005, our most prolific period of AFL players in history.

Sports where we have managed to pinch “one” each in, are Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cross CountryTable Tennis and Tennis. We’ve never broken through in Cricket – managing Runner-Up once when Jon McCormick dominated as a bottom-aged Year 7 in the Junior team of 1995.

We won the overall Track & Field in 1995.

Individually, a few have won a State Championship in multiple Team Sports.

Daniel Barassi and Jordan Fisher sit as our greatest all-rounders of all time, winning in 3 Sports, for a total of 4 Titles. They were both in the 1998 Intermediate Football team as Year 9s, the 2000 Intermediate Volleyball team as Year 10s, and then the back-to-back winning Lawn Bowls teams of 2001 and 2002 as Seniors. Quite remarkable.

Alice Minns is the only other to win a State Title in 3 different Sports. She won in Cross Country Skiing as a Year 7 (1995), then both Football and Volleyball in a huge 1998 at Year 10.

Daniel McCullough has 4 Titles from 3 Sports. He won 3 Squash titles (2001, 2003, 2005), and a Football title in 2002 at Year 8. He, Fisher and Barassi are the only three to win 4 Titles.

Riley Minns (Alice‘s brother) is in the next bracket with 8 others to have won 3 Titles across 2 Sports. The others are 5 girls from the Class of 2000 (Melissa Andison, Alice CunninghamNicole Everitt, Susie James and Cassie Jones) and 3 girls from the Class Of 1988 (Kerri Flanagan, Mandy Flynn and Janine Kneebone). Kate Spiller is down for 1x Football and 2x Cross Country Skiing Titles, however she highly likely has more Skiing titles to uncover.

There are 18 others with 2 Sports and 2 Titles.

Family-wise, 9 have had 3 children win a State Title – the Conroy, Fisher, Stamp, Flynn, Box, Clarke, Cook, Williamson and McIlroy families.

Regarding combined wins, 3 families sit at the top with 6 each – the Conroy siblings (Michael 3x Squash, Lauren 2x Squash and John 1x Football), the Fisher brothers (Jordan 4, Todd 1, Joel 1), and the Minns siblings (Alice 3, Riley 3).

Behind them are 3 families with 5 Titles – the Stamp boys (Heath 3, Matt 1, Jack 1), the Norman siblings (Karl 3, Amanda 2) and the Flynn family (Mandy 3, Kelli 1 and Shane 1).

Eight families can boast 4 Titles – the Gamze brothers (Brendan 3, Simon 1), the Box boys (Alister 2, David 1, Shane 1) the Clarke girls (Lorissa 2, Marnie 1 and Stacey 1), the Knox sisters (Renae 2, Shannon 2), the Valencia siblings (Mark 2, Leah 2), the Thompsons (Scott 2, Sharnee 2) and the McGuires (Anthony 2, Kellie 2).

There a number of Skiing families to add to the above, once we uncover who was in each of the Champions Ski teams.

Can you help us add to the State Champion history?

If you:
