Principal's Report

Year 12 – Class of 2020

Last week was the last of our formal classes for our Year 12 students.  It has been a year of challenges and our School Leadership and staff could not have been more impressed with the student’s maturity and resilience throughout 2020 as they have tackled the completion of their classes and assessments.  Our Year 12 cohort have maintained their focus and continued with their studies despite a most interrupted and unusual year.

Whilst completing their final formal classes last week, students also participated in a range of themed dress days to celebrate the end of their classes for 2020.  This culminated with Friday morning, with many fancy dress costumes and a shared breakfast for our Class of 2020. Take a look at the Class of 2020 article for photos.

This week students will be preparing for VCE exams and completing outcomes for both VCE and VCAL studies.  The English Exam is on Tuesday 10th November 2020, commencing at 9:00am.  Students should arrive at least 30 minutes before the commencement of each exam.

On behalf of the entire school and wider school community, I would like to wish our students all the very best for the coming weeks of study, completing outcomes and undertaking exams. We look forward to celebrating the completion of your Year 12 studies with you at our 2020 Graduation Dinner on Friday 4th December.

To our Year 12 teachers of 2020, whilst your work is not yet done, you have certainly survived the face to face and remote elements of 2020. Whilst you have survived, you have enabled our students to thrive and remain focused through what has been a year like no other. Your perseverance, resilience and commitment to our students has ensured that as many students as possible have the opportunity to successfully complete Year 12. We know this is a huge task at the best of times and it has been extra complicated this year. Our students and their parents are thankful for the steps you have taken this year to ensure that students can leave Wangaratta High School with pathway options to an apprenticeship, TAFE, work or university.  Your work makes a difference. We thank you for this. A special thank you is extended to our leaders in the Senior School space who have guided and supported our students this year and for many before it, thank you Libby Walters, Meg Whatley and Lesley Forman.

Reminder re expectations at Wangaratta High School

A brief reminder of some important day to day expectations that we have for students at Wangaratta High School:

  • ALL students are encouraged to wear a hat whilst outside at recess and lunchtime. Ideally, this would be the school approved bucket hat.  We will also accept students wearing appropriate broad brimmed hats. Caps should not be worn at school.
  • ALL students are expected to wear the School Council approved uniform.  We understand some concerns regarding the current white shirt and a process for review is currently occurring. Until any change is approved, we would ask that students and parents please support the current uniform.
  • Students are expected to be prepared for all classes and Ready to Learn. Students should have with them all necessary equipment and a charged device if appropriate.
  • COVID – Hygiene – It is vitally important that students who show any symptoms of the virus are asked to stay home.  Personal hygiene needs to be maintained along with social distancing, mask wearing and hand sanitising.

School Principal Change for 2021

After almost 3 years as Principal of Wangaratta High School, I am writing to inform you of changes for the 2021 school year.
With due consideration, I have accepted a provisional appointment as Principal of Epping Secondary College from the commencement of the 2021 school year.
Over the weeks ahead and as the provisional appointment is confirmed, the Regional Office will be working to ensure a Principal is in place for the start of the 2021 school year. This process will be undertaken with the support of School Council.
Our new Principal for 2021 will be ably supported by our leadership team who have worked over the last three years to develop as a team of leaders, who are equipped to support both operational and strategic elements of our school improvement journey for the years ahead. The Leadership Team to take our school into 2021 are:

  • Assistant Principal (Positive Climate for Learning) – Michelle Bootes
  • Assistant Principal (Excellence in Teaching & Learning) – Bronwyn Wright (Term 1) and Lea Baxter (Term 2-4)
  • Leading Teachers – John Paola, Libby Walters and Lyn Higgins
  • Learning Specialists – Melissa Cole, Peter Breukers and one other to be appointed
  • Business Manager – Kylie Fountain

As we work towards concluding 2020, we will be continuing to support all students to ensure a connection to school and their learning in what has been a disrupted year.  This includes building and communicating our structures and supports for all students in the year ahead.
Finally, a very genuine and sincere thank you for the opportunity to lead your school over the last few years and make a positive contribution to the success of Wangaratta High School, our students and staff.

Brad Moyle

Executive Principal

Farewell to Class of 2020

Good luck to our Class of 2020 as they head into exams.

During Term 3 students in Work Related Skills VCAL focused on fire safety.

Students learnt about fire extinguisher safety and other safety equipment, how to write an evacuation plan for a work place and what happens when fire codes are broken.

Students also completed their Fire Warden Certificate which focused on the skills they need to assist others during an emergency in the workplace.

Well done!

Year 11 White Water Rafting

Year 11 Outdoor and Environmental Studies
White Water Rafting King River
On Monday 2nd of November the Year 11 Outdoor students were lucky enough to participate in only their second trip this year. In Year 10 Outdoor Education, most students were introduced to flat water canoeing at Lake William-Hovell, and now had the opportunity to progress those skills on moving water.

The conditions including weather and water levels were perfect. Students were able to navigate all rapids between the dam wall and the exit point. With only a few capsizes throughout the day, it was a testament to the skill and courage shown by the class.

Below is an account of the day from one of the students

The white water rafting excursion that I was lucky enough to be a part of was an absolute blast. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that wants a controlled and exciting time.

It was a great experience being able to try and develop new skills as well as the camaraderie that came with working in our little group, with partners in boats and actively communicating to overcome some particularly difficult obstacles. We also helped others get out of situations such as pushing people off rocks back into the river or just yelling instructions or directions.

With the limited knowledge we had the expectation was something very dangerous and we were very jittery when jumping into situations we thought we weren't ready for, so it felt so good when you passed it and made your confidence skyrocket until you landed in the drink.
