Principal Report

Year 12 News

Congratulations to our Year 12 VCE students who are now in the final days of exams. On behalf of the High School I would once again like to wish them well and congratulate them on their efforts.  This has been an incredibly tough year for all students and in particular for the Year 12s in their final year.  As a school community, we could not be prouder with how you have handled this and the work you have put in collectively to make it to this point.  We look forward to celebrating your Graduation from Wangaratta High School with many of you on Friday 4th December.

As many of you would be aware our dates for the release of final results for our Year 12 students has moved to December 30th, 2020.  We look forward to celebrating the many achievements of our students once results are released on this date.  However, more importantly, we will be open for business on Friday 30th December in order to provide support and assistance to any of our Year 12 students who require it.  On this day we will have a number of staff available to provide advice regarding future pathways, changing preferences and of course to celebrate results with our students.  More detailed information about this day will be provide to all Year 12 students before the end of Term.

2021 Step Up Program

Over the last two weeks our senior students have been participating in the 2021 Step Up program.  This has been an excellent opportunity for our students to commence their Year 11 (2021) and Year 12 (2021) studies and prepare for the rigours of completing their senior secondary VCE or VCAL certificate over the years ahead.

Where possible students will have met their 2021 teachers for their senior subjects, been introduced to the core requirements of the subject and in many cases will have some follow up tasks to complete in preparation for next year.  Parents / Carers are reminded that Year 11 and 12 students will require specific textbooks and materials for 2021 and further details about these requirements can be found on COMPASS and also our school website at https://www.whs.vic.edu.au/page/276/2021-Parent-Payments-&-Booklists

Tutor Learning Initiative 2021

Earlier this term Minister for Education, James Merlino announced the 2021 Tutor Learning Initiative, a once off injection of funding into schools to support students whose learning has been disrupted through flexible and remote learning in 2020.  We are currently working our way through a comprehensive process to identify students that will benefit from tutor support next year and to recruit suitable tutors to assist our students.

At Wangaratta High School the Tutor Learning Initiative will work as a blended model, supporting small groups of students within their normal classes to allow direct and differentiated support to students who need additional support with their learning without these students missing their everyday classes.  For some students though, there will be times in which they will be withdrawn for some individual and specific support around identified areas.

As we work our way through identifying students who may benefit from the tutor initiative in 2021 we will be notifying parents/carers and seeking your support to make the most of this valuable opportunity to support those students who need to reconnect with their learning in order to achieve their best possible results at school.  Our Tutor Initiative will commence in Term 1 and more details will be provided to all families at the commencement of the new school year.

Parent, Student and Staff Surveys 2020

Each year we conduct surveys of our parents, students and staff in order to further inform our school improvement work.  Most of these surveys have been conducted over the last couple of months and the results are now available.  On behalf of our Leadership and School Improvement Teams, a very sincere thank you to the parents, students and staff who have provided us with this valuable feedback.  This feedback will be comprehensively analysed and further shared with our school community through the 2020 Annual Report.  Highlights from our 2020 Surveys include:

Parent Survey

  • 9 out of 20 factors showing improvement over 2019 results, with key growth of positive endorsement by parents in General Satisfaction, the Physical Environment and the provision of a stimulating learning environment.
  • 4 out of 20 factors showing similar results to 2019.

Student Survey

Key improvements recorded by students in the areas of

  • Differentiated learning challenge
  • Stimulated learning

Staff Survey

Some amazing growth and development in the level of positive endorsement by staff across the school with 36 out of 41 factors showing improvements over 2019 staff survey results.  Key improvements were recorded in areas such as:

  • Planning differentiated learning activities
  • Professional learning targeted to support literacy and numeracy
  • Seeking feedback to improve practice
  • Using an agreed pedagogical instructional model.

Student Work - Canoe Skills Day

Year 10 Outdoor Education – Canoe Skills Day

On the 16th of November the Year 10 Outdoor Education class participated in a flat-water canoeing skills day at Lake William-Hovell.

Year 10 Outdoor Education is an applied learning course, and this was the opportunity for students to put in practice some of the concepts learnt in class.

Students developed their abilities to manoeuvre a Canadian Canoe using multiple strokes including sweep, rudder and draw strokes. The class also performed deep water t-rescues with expert proficiency.

Mr. Judd Mullins and Trainee Ky Williamson attended as staff and the students enjoyed having their coordinator and Ky along for the day.

Upon reflection, many students stated they would have liked longer on the water to really hone the skills. Hopefully, the students who continue with their outdoors learning will have future opportunities to paddle along the Murray and some adrenaline-charged white-water adventures.
