Principal Report

Welcome to 2021. It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 school year. For those students new to the school at Year 7 or other Year levels, welcome and we look forward to developing strong and supportive relationships with you and your family to ensure a positive experience of secondary schooling for you. For all our other students, welcome back to what is promising to be a year of continued school improvement and supporting you to be your best at Wangaratta High School.

WHS Core Values:

Respect, Ready to Learn, Personal Best and Safe

New Staff:

We are delighted to welcome a number of new staff to the High School in 2021. We are looking forward to getting to know our new staff and witnessing firsthand the opportunities that they will provide to our students.

Changes to Staff Roles:

John Paola assistant Principal for Positive Climate for Learning

Deb Bisinella as Middle School Leader

Ready to Learn

Ready to Learn is one of our school core values. Importantly we expect students to be on time to class and to have all required equipment for class. This includes bringing their laptop device, books and writing implements, such as a pen to every class during the day. Being Ready to Learn places students in a position that enables them to do their Personal Best.

Mobile Phone Policy

Thank you to the many students and parents who have continued to support the Mobile Phone policy. This policy, introduced by the Minister for Education, continues to ensure that our students have one less distraction in class and enables students to focus on their learning during class time and develop strong connections with their peers at recess and lunch. We look forward to your continued support of this policy throughout the year.

Uniforms give students a sense of belonging and enhance pride in their school. Wearing a uniform shows unity and identity. Uniforms help students prepare for the workforce. Whether it's wearing safety gear in a construction job or corporate wear in an office, most jobs require a standard of dress. It is an expectation that students of Wangaratta High School come to school in correct uniform. Where circumstances make it difficult to provide uniform, our wellbeing team will assist families to obtain uniform for their children.

A reminder that students are encouraged to bring their laptop to school on a daily basis. This is a valuable learning tool that teachers want to utilise in their learning programs and can only do so fully when all students remember to bring a fully charged device to school each day. Over the holidays new digital TVs or projectors were installed in all learning spaces. Many teachers will continue to use Google Classroom as a platform for their learning programs.

Tutor Learning Initiative

Some of our students thrived in the remote and flexible learning environment in 2020, others have maintained their learning progress, and some have fallen behind, despite their best efforts and those of their families and teachers. We will support those who need it to catch up via the Tutor Learning Initiative.

The Tutor Learning Initiative will sit alongside MacqLit Literacy Support and the Middle Years Literacy & Numeracy Strategy (MYLNS) Support, in ensuring all students at Wangaratta High School have the opportunity to maximise their learning growth and achievement.

Students selected for this initiative will work with the Tutor Teachers in small groups in their Mathematics or English classes. Over the next few weeks more information will be sent out to families of those students involved in the initiative.

Social and Personal Development Program (SPD)

Social and Emotional Learning is about building resilience in young people. SPD sets out to explicitly teach a range of skills, including those necessary to:

  • understand and manage emotions
  • set and achieve positive goals
  • feel and show empathy for others
  • establish and maintain positive relationships
  • make responsible decisions

All students benefit from being taught Social and Emotional Learning. Research shows that student mental health and engagement in learning improves when they are taught Social and Emotional Learning. SPD lessons will be taught every Tuesday and Thursday after session 2 to all students from Years 7 to 12. WHS will supply wellbeing books to each student that are Year Level appropriate.

On Code RED fire days there will be school closures to ensure the safety of students, teachers and parents. Information around possible school closures in this event will go out to families soon.
