Principal Report Issue 10

We have been through two short Flexible and Remote Learning (FRL) periods during semester one. Once again, over the last six months our school community and the individuals that make it up have demonstrated the ability to not only manage change but to make the most of situations and to pivot and adapt practices.

We ask that students and parents regularly check COMPASS as our main communication tool. COMPASS also allows parents the opportunity to communicate directly with our teachers. COMPASS will contain the details of learning tasks and the commitments required of students directly to parents.  If at any stage you are unsure, please contact your child’s teacher, either via COMPASS email or telephoning the school.

It has been great to see the improvement in the wearing of school uniform by our students. A reminder going into term 3 that “hoodies” are not to be worn to school, as this supports our work in ensuring that we can maintain security at the school during school hours.

Thank You

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our students across all Year levels for their efforts to continue learning, giving their Personal Best. Students should be proud of what they have achieved and this will be reflected in End of Semester Reports that will be available on COMPASS on Friday June 25.

Thank you to the many parents and carers who have actively supported student learning, sometimes whilst also trying to juggle your own workload.  Your support has been invaluable and we look forward to that continuing in Term 3.

Finally, to our staff team. Thank you for your commitment to our students, including the endless hours of work preparation, marking and communicating with our students and parents.

Students, parents, carers and staff, may you all find some down time over the break. Stay safe, stay healthy and we look forward to seeing all of our students back on site Monday 12th July.

Principal Appointment Announcement

Dear Parents/Careres,

As you would be aware, we have been working through the principal selection process for Wangaratta High School. I write to inform you that the process has now been completed, and, unfortunately, has resulted in a 'No Appointment'.
Moving foward, Michelle Bootes has agreed to continue in the role of Acting Principal for Term 3 to maintain leadership continuity and stability for staff, students and families. The vacant Executive Principal position will be re-advertised in the beginning of Term 3, with an intended start date of Term 4.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michelle, the leadership team and all staff for their ongoing commitment to the school and hard work they have put in throughout this year so far.
We will keep you informed of the new selection proces and timeline, once Term 3 commences.

Term 2 GOTCHA Award Winners

Yesterday during SPD, we held our Middle Years SWPBS (Gotcha) Awards for Term 2.
3 students in Year 7, 8 and 9 respectively were given an award for accumulating the most GOTCHA's over the term.
At WHS we use GOTCHA Awards to reward students for displaying positive behaviour.
Students remain engaged when they have a positive incentive and are self-motivated to earn rewards. Incentive rewards offer tangible signs of progress and success and provide students with positive feedback and helps reinforce positive behaviours and expectations.
Congratulations to Parker Lappin (Year 7), Katie Chapman (Year 8) and Elizabeth Moffat (Year 9) for taking out the Term 2 award for their respective year levels. Keep up the fantastic work!
Awards were also given to the SPD Group in each year level who accumulated the most GOTCHA's collectively as a class.
Congratulations 7A, 8C and 9D!
The Senior Years GOTCHA Assembly will be held during tomorrow's SPD, and award winners will be published in next term's newsletter.

Morrisby Career Profiling Interviews

During the last two weeks of Term 2, the Year 9 Students have been participating in their follow up interview post the Morrisby Career Profiling. Each student who completed the profiling will have an interview with a career profiler who will go through the results and explain possible courses and pathways. The students will be given a book of their results and are encouraged to use the book to assist with selecting subjects for year 10.

Each student will have life-long access to their profile on the Morrisby web page.

Pictured below is Lachie Barbour during his interview.

Beechworth Writing Festival

Beechworth Winterwords was a celebration of the wonder of words which took place over the Winter Solstice Weekend from 18th-21st June 2021. As part of the celebration, people were invited to enter a writing competition where entrants were required to write a short story that was precisely 100 words long. Winners of each category were announced by the Short Story Writers ‘In Conversation’ panel consisting of published authors Marg Hickey, Cate Kennedy and Kate Rotherham.
Amelia Roberts of 8E entered her short story and was announced as the winner of the 12-18 age group! Erin Hepburn of 8E also entered and was awarded a special commendation. Congratulations to both students for entering and especially to Amelia for winning!! A copy of her story is below.

"Life or Death"
I stroke as hard as I can against the tugging water but I know by no that it i no use. I stop and let myself float in the water, listening to the heart monitor and the nurses bustling around my unconscious body. I'm done fighting. My body aches from the constant action to get out of the water. My heart aches for what I'm about to lose. My parents, my siblings, my dog, I love them all so much. But it is time. I need to do this now or I will eternally suffer. I drift into the light.

Victorian's Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premiers’ Reading Challenge encourages children and students to read a set number of books over the year and record their efforts online. Since the Challenge first began in 2005, more than 3 million students have read nearly 51 million books.

The Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge is open to Wangaratta High School students for 2021. There are over 12,000 titles on the VPRC reading list, and a book for everyone.

On completion, students will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.

For students in years 3 to 10, the Challenge is to read 15 books. The Challenge finishes in late September, so there is plenty of time to read them.
There will be a tub full of a variety of VPRC recommended books, even quick reads to get you started, avaliable in the library.

Books, you've already read over the last month, could also be included.  Every book read will accumulate points for your class, earning the title "2021 Challenge Winners".

A running scoreboard will be on display in the Library.
If you are interested, please see Ms Wyatt the Librarian, in the Senior Library office or speak with your English teacher.

Curriculum Day - Wednesday 25th August

A reminder that Curriculum Day is next Wednesday 25th August.
This will be a student-free day. No students are required on site.

CSEF Application Deadline Extended

Schools now have until 13 August to submit CSEF applications.

To support schools through COVID-19 restrictions, the Department has extended the deadline for schools to submit Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) applications to Friday 13 August.

This means schools do not have to submit CSEF application forms to the Department through the CSEF system before the end of Term 2, as previously communicated.

The CSEF helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

Families with a valid means-tested concession card, such as a Veterans Affairs Gold Card, Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, as well as temporary foster parents, are eligible to apply. There is also a special consideration category for asylum seeker and refugee families.

The means-tested concession cards must be valid on either:

  • the first day of Term 1 (Wednesday 27 January 2021)
  • the first day of Term 2 (Monday 19 April 2021)
  • the first day of Term 3 (Monday 12 July 2021).
