Principal Report Issue 12

We have once again visited Flexible and Remote Learning (FRL) as our community continues to respond to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and concerns around the delta variant. Throughout each lockdown our school community and the individuals that make it up continue to demonstrate the ability to not only manage change but to make the most of the situation and to pivot and adapt practices.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Wangaratta High School staff for their work during Flexible and Remote Learning to support students with their online learning, and to the many families who also supported their children during this time. We are certainly glad to be back at school and re-establishing connections with our friends and peers.

COVIDsafe Behaviours

Face Masks

As directed by the Victorian Chief Health Officer:

  • School staff and secondary school students aged 12 or older must always wear a face mask indoors and outdoors at school.
  • For communication purposes, teachers and education support staff are not required to wear face masks while teaching, but those who wish to do so, can. It is recommended that face masks be worn while teaching wherever practicable.
  • Face masks are mandatory for all school staff and school students aged 12 or older when travelling to and from school, including on public transport.

The most important action school communities can take to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19, is to ensure that any unwell staff and students remain at home and get tested, even with the mildest of symptoms.

  • All staff, students and visitors to schools should undertake regular hand hygiene, particularly on arrival to school, before and after eating, after blowing their nose, coughing, sneezing or using the toilet.
  • Sharing of food is not permitted. Please do not drop off food such as fast food takeaway to be shared with your child’s friends.
  • Use non-contact greetings (not shaking hands, hugging or kissing).

2021 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents/caregivers/guardians (previously known as the Parent Opinion Survey). It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, student engagement and experiences of remote and flexible learning. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey . All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year, the Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 19th July to Sunday 22nd August.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek.

Premier's VCE Awards

Congratulations Ulrika Wild & Macy Nichol.

Congratulations to Year 12 students Ulrika Wild and Macy Nichol who have been recognised with a Premier’s VCE Award for their outstanding academic results in 2020.

Macy was one of three students across the state to recieve the award for Ancient History, and Uli was also one of three students across the state to recieve the award for German, which she studied via distance learning.

The two girls scored a 48 (out of a possible 50) in their respective subjects, which they both studied last year as Year 11's.

The girls were among 297 students across Victoria recognised for their efforts during 2020 VCE, in what was a particular hard year for senior students, given the amount of disruption COVID-19 caused.

Macy and Uli's achievements have attracted significant local media attention over the last few days, as the results are an exceptional feat for students in regional areas, and almost a rareity. Most of the VCE Premier Awards are taken out by students in metro areas, so to have two WHS students take out the top spot is a fantastic effort. Macy and Uli have been busy today and yesterday with photo shoots and interviews with both the Wangaratta Chronicle and the Border Mail.

Macy and Uli extend their utmost thanks to not only their VCE teachers, but all their teachers since Year 7. Each and every one of the girls' teachers has made an impotrant impact, and helped the girls' achieve what they have today.

The entire Wangaratta High School community is proud of both girls, and would like to congratulate them on being the recipients of such a prestigious award.

Yearbook Expression of Interest

Wangaratta High School produces a "Yearbook" at the end of each year, and is avaliable to all staff and students to purchase.

The Yearbook fee will appear on your statement, unless you have specifically spoken to our Finance team to ask it to be taken off.

So we can gather a rough estimate of how many yearbooks to order at the end of the year, we are kindly asking that if you do wish to recieve a 2021 yearbook, to please have your allocated yearbook fee to be paid by the last week of Term 3. The yearbook fee is $22.

Please note that it is not compulsory to recieve a yearbook. If you and your family do not wish to recieve one, please notify our front office on 03 5723 0500 to have this fee taken off your statement.

If you have any photo's from throughout the year so far, we are trying to collate as many as possible to make this the best yearbook yet!
We are looking for any photo's to do with Wangaratta High School - photos from events, assemblies, artwork, achievements - if you have any that you think might be 'yearbook worthy', please bring them in on a hard-drive to Briony (Media/Events Coordinator) in the front office.
