Principal Report

Student Success

Year 12 students Ulrika Wild and Macy Nichol were recognised for their outstanding academic achievements in their VCE subjects, German and Ancient History respectively, in 2020 by winning the prestigious Premier’s Award. They were among 297 students state-wide who were recognised for their VCE efforts in 2020. Both girls felt that their “results demonstrated that such achievements were possible in any circumstances.”
To top this off, Ulrika has been offered the prestigious Tuckwell Scholarship to study at the Australian National University. Congratulations to both students who embody our core values by: Making the most of their learning opportunities, being persistent and resilient learners, and always challenging themselves. They also demonstrate both pride in themselves and the school.

COVIDsafe Behaviours-Face Masks

As directed by the Victorian Chief Health Officer:

  • School staff and secondary school students aged 12 or older must always wear a face mask indoors and outdoors at school.
  • For communication purposes, teachers and education support staff are not required to wear face masks while teaching, but those who wish to do so, can. It is recommended that face masks be worn while teaching wherever practicable.
  • Face masks are mandatory for all school staff and school students aged 12 or older when travelling to and from school, including on public transport.

2021 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

WE WANT OUR PARENTS/CAREGIVERS/GUARDIANS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK! If you have received an invite to participate, please do so by September

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents/caregivers/guardians (previously known as the Parent Opinion Survey). It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, student engagement and experiences of remote and flexible learning. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.

Subject Selection

This week students in years 10 and 11 will be participating in their subject selections for 2022. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we were unable to conduct interviews with parents present. However, a dedicated team of teachers will conduct individual subject selection conferences with students today and Thursday. Students will receive, after their interview, a subject selection document which they will take home for parents to sign. Signed subject selection sheets must be handed in to the administration office by close of Friday 2oth August.

School for Student Leadership

The following article has been written by our Student Leadership School Students TJ Cox, Kalika Miliankos-King, Zoe Baguley and James Shaw.

About Us:
We are Zoe Baguley, Kalika Miliankos-King, James Shaw and TJ Cox and we were the four lucky year nine students that were selected to go to the Snowy River Campus in Term 3 2021.

Our CLP Project:
We decided to involve our whole community in the help of making a garden bed with the VCAL students. The idea of this project is to have the input of the community and hopefully promote a cleaner environment. We want to do this to bring our community closer and possibly make new friends you never thought you’d even talk to or from different schools or age groups.

How's the SSL different from normal schools?:
The school of student leadership is to build self-confidence and independence for each individual student. It is different because we have student leaders leading each different day, and we each get two chances where we get to share two me in a minutes. Along with being student leaders we also have duties like serving people for all meals (breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner) plus cleaning and washing up. These roles are chosen at random out of a bag by the student leaders that day and are switched up each day.Our classes look a little different too, we have 4 classes throughout the day. Morning class, morning class continued, afternoon class and night class. Even though night class seems like a waste of time, it’s actually enjoyable for all of us.

Last week we went on our first expo. On expo you go on a big hike across both the beach and in the bush. We hiked 23km over two days which was very painful. We had to make our own food which looked really good. When we got to our campsite on the first day we had to set up our tents and then do our reflection for the day. Our hiking bags were really heavy because you have to carry lots of things and even it out between the group. When we got back we had to do a massive clean of everything. Some people were so sore they had bruises on their hips from the hiking bag.

This is our Expo group with us, Scoresby Secondary College and Dandenong High School.

Zoe: My highlight so far is meeting new people from different schools all around Victoria and getting to know them more.
Kiki: My highlight has been eating expo slice on expo (which Kiki has a strange addiction to). Ms Mac thinking I’m funny and Chelsea.
James: My highlight so far has been the expo because I enjoyed hiking and talking to new people.
TJ: My ultimate highlight so far at the SSL is making new friends with people I never expected to even meet in my lifetime. Although I was weary of not having friends for the entire 9 weeks I found it actually enjoyable, especially all the fun creative activities we complete.

Young Creator's Market - headspace

headspace Wangaratta is organizing a youth-run market on the 18th of September this year, the Young Creator's Market. The market will be held in front of the Holy Trinity Cathedral between Ovens and Docker street.

All stalls in the market will be organized and created by the Young people of Wangaratta and surrounding areas.

The stalls can sell any products that the youth see fit, from produce from their garden, keyrings, sculptures, or art, bake sales, services, jewellery, etc.

headspace is really looking for the inclusion of the local schools and the participation of students. This event is a great tool to assist and teach students in how to successfully produce and sell products to a large audience. We understand that some schools already have programs like this in place to teach students these exact things and we would love to help these students make more of a profit and a greater experience as they can sell to a wide audience and have great publicity through the markets.

The market is not restricted to the group already learning about this, anyone aged 12 - 25 is welcome to be a market holder on this occasion.

Information to consider:

  1. Items that require buyers to be 18 are not acceptable for the Young creator's market.
  2. There will be a $30 deposit to ensure your place in the market. This will be refunded after the event
  3. All profits made by your stall will go directly to you
  4. If your stall is going to sell baked goods, all cooking and preparation must be done in a registered kitchen and all participants running the stall must have food handling licenses
  5. All equipment that you need is BYO
  6. This event is organized by Headspace Wangaratta

Wangaratta High School produces a "Yearbook" at the end of each year, and is avaliable to all staff and students to purchase.

The Yearbook fee will appear on your statement, unless you have specifically spoken to our Finance team to ask it to be taken off.

So we can gather a rough estimate of how many yearbooks to order at the end of the year, we are kindly asking that if you do wish to recieve a 2021 yearbook, to please have your allocated yearbook fee to be paid by the last week of Term 3. The yearbook fee is $22.

Please note that it is not compulsory to recieve a yearbook. If you and your family do not wish to recieve one, please notify our front office on 03 5723 0500 to have this fee taken off your statement.

If you have any photo's from throughout the year so far, we are trying to collate as many as possible to make this the best yearbook yet!
We are looking for any photo's to do with Wangaratta High School - photos from events, assemblies, artwork, achievements - if you have any that you think might be 'yearbook worthy', please bring them in on a hard-drive to Briony (Media/Events Coordinator) in the front office.

Bunnings Wangaratta BBQ Fundraiser Application Pack
Bunnings Wangaratta has a strong commitment to Community Involvement and one of our most popular fundraisers that local Community groups can take advantage of is our offer to operate a BBQ at the front of our store.
The ‘Bunnings Community BBQ’ is a great way for your group to raise some much-needed funds.
BBQ’s are operated on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays.
Bunnings will provide you a marquee, one trestle table, BBQ & gas for the day.
However, the equipment we provide for your group to use must be thoroughly cleaned and left in a clean, hygienic condition for the next group to use. Failure to do this will result in your group being charged for any cleaning costs incurred. We believe this to be a reasonable and fair request for all involved.
The first step to conducting a BBQ is to read all the information provided in this pack, complete the information required on the following form and return them to the store. This can be found here.
