Co-Curricular Programs & Events

Wangaratta High School is very proud of the outstanding achievements of our students in the wide range of co-curricular programs on offer.

Co-Curricular Programs

We value the learning that comes from students challenging themselves with new experiences and environments.

Wangaratta High School offers an innovative drama program for all students from Year 8 through to VCE studies. Students explore dramatic terminology, performance skills and styles and have the chance to build their creativity and confidence in diverse and safe learning spaces. At a VCE level students create ensemble and solo performances, explore eclectic theatre and have the opportunity to view professional performances.

Students can also participate in the annual school production. This is an opportunity for students in Year 7 – 12 to get involved either on-stage performing or off-stage in the production areas including set design, costume, lighting, make-up and sound. The annual school production showcases the talent of students from all year levels and is a highlight of the school calendar. Planning for the 2021 production is now underway.

Wangaratta High School has an outstanding music program open to all students from Year 7 to 12. Individual and group music lessons in a broad range of instruments complement our bands and ensemble groups providing many opportunities for students to perform each year in community concerts and tours around Australia.

Students have the opportunity each year to participate in the Kool Skools program, providing them a chance to record their own songs at Studio 52 in Collingwood, Melbourne. Creative students also have the opportunity to design and create the album artwork.

In 2019, our students competed at national and regional battle of the bands events, earning awards and praise from industry-leading professionals.

WHS offers a diverse range of Technology subjects, housed in our purpose built, state of the art and modern Technology facility. Students from all year levels immerse themselves in creative and critical thinking, choosing from a range of specialist subject areas; Food Technology, Product Design Technology Textiles, Wood, Metal Technology, and Systems Engineering. All subjects are conducted in specialised highly resourced workrooms and have a skills for life approach to teaching and learning.

Overseas Personal Challenge Expedition

Each year, students in Year 9 are invited to take part in an overseas personal challenge expedition. Students take part in a three week journey to a developing country and learn to think on their feet, work together and gain real-world resilience.

Through the program students are empowered to work as a team as they make all travel decisions including where they get their next meal and which accommodation they will sleep in that night. The program includes a meaningful and sustainable community service project; a trek through inspiring terrain; and sightseeing – all while engaging with locals and their cultural traditions.

School Camps

Our students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of challenging, enriching and fun experiences through our camps program.

A range of camps are run each year including Year 7 camp, Year 9 camp and a Year 12 study camp.

Year 9 students are also offered the chance to take part in the School for Student Leadership, a Victorian Department of Education and Training initiative offering a unique residential education experience for 9 weeks for Year 9 students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects. The 2021 School for Student Leadership will be held at the Snowy River Campus in Marlo.

Wangaratta High School offers a wide range of sports and holds a House swimming and athletics carnival during each school year.

The annual sport carnivals are one of the most colourful events on the School calendar. The events are an intra-school competition where each of the four houses ( King, Merriwa, Ovens, Wareena ) earns points for competing and for having the loudest, most colourful cheer squads, as well as through competing in and placing in each event.

The annual “Mini Olympics” provides another opportunity to earn house points and students in Year 7 participate in athletics specific tabloid running, jumping and throwing activities.

Students in all year levels have the opportunity to try out for many interschool sporting teams which compete under the School Sport Victoria guidelines. These include badminton, baseball, basketball, cricket, cross country running, football, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, soccer, softball, tennis, table tennis and volleyball. If these teams are successful at Upper Hume division level they progress to Hume Region and success there takes them to State Championships.

Youth Parliament

Youth Parliament is an initiative supported by the Victorian Government and provides the opportunity for young Victorians to stand up, talk and be heard. Wangaratta High School offers this opportunity to Year 10 students to draft and debate legislation, conduct research into issues and receive training in public speaking and leadership skills.

More than 20 bills passed by Youth Parliament have gone on to become law, including laws covering mandatory wearing of bike helmets and nightclub safety reforms. In 2015, a bill developed by Wangaratta High School students was successfully passed.
